Surgical and Non-Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatments: An Overview

Okay, ladies. Let’s get personal and talk about surgical and non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments.

What is vaginal rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation is a term that encompasses a variety of both surgical and non-surgical procedures that aim to enhance or correct the function, comfort, and appearance of the vagina. For many women, after undergoing major events such as childbirth or simply as we age, it can lead to unfavorable body changes in our vaginal area. Among many others, some of these changes could include vaginal laxity, vaginal atrophy, decreased lubrication, urinary incontinence, and a decrease in sexual pleasure.

Why vaginal rejuvenation?

The vagina is made of highly elastic tissue, supported by a series of mostly horizontal muscles in the pelvic floor. The length and width of the non-muscular vaginal canal varies slightly person-to-person. This vaginal tissue can stretch and then return to the same size, but this may begin to change as you age and after the process of childbirth.

Childbirth obviously may cause changes as major expansion is needed to push a baby out. With age, there may be changes in hormones that reduce the strength of the muscle and the surrounding connective tissues. Because of this, the vagina may begin to lose elasticity. The vaginal walls can also become thin due to a lack of estrogen, making one feel a change in the diameter or a feeling of looseness. This is known as vaginal atrophy. Vaginal atrophy occurs most often after menopause. For many women, vaginal atrophy not only leads to distressing urinary symptoms but also makes intercourse painful, causing sexual dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction is reported by approximately 40 percent of women worldwide. Female sexual dysfunction refers to a sexual problem associated with personal distress. It takes different forms, including lack of sexual desire, impaired arousal, inability to achieve orgasm, or pain with sexual activity. Many of these symptoms can be linked to the natural aging process of the vagina or to the changes that occur with pregnancy and childbirth. And as vaginal rejuvenation seeks to correct some of these issues, both surgical and non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments have been gaining in popularity over recent years.

Surgical vaginal rejuvenation

Several surgical treatment options fall under the umbrella of vaginal rejuvenation. Some of them are more cosmetic in nature, but all of them must be performed by a plastic surgeon and require a notable recovery period. A couple of the more common restorative vaginal rejuvenation surgeries are vaginoplasty and labiaplasty.

Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure administered with local anesthetic or under IV sedation that tightens the inner vaginal canal. The procedure generally takes about an hour but depends on the amount of tissue being operated on. Patients are usually able to go back to work about a week after the procedure. But they are advised not to do any heavy lifting for at least four weeks. Normal activities can be resumed after the patient is fully healed, which is generally within six to eight weeks.

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure to reduce the size of the labia minora so they don’t fall below the labia majora. This procedure is also performed to correct asymmetrical vaginal lips so they don’t pull or tug during sexual intercourse and other activities, causing pain or discomfort. Individual healing times depend on the extent of the procedure. But most patients return to work after one or two weeks of the surgery. Although swelling will reduce four to six weeks after the procedure, final results may take up to six months.

Non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments

Non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments are an excellent alternative to the more invasive surgical options. They are more comfortable and quick (usually only taking around 30 minutes) than an invasive procedure. There is also no downtime after getting a non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatment. A normal routine and activities can be resumed (including intercourse) on the same day of the treatment. However, a few sessions spaced a few weeks apart may be required for full effect. The most common non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments are radiofrequency (RF) energy treatments and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatments.

Radiofrequency (RF) energy treatments

Radiofrequency (RF) energy treatment is a non-surgical procedure that uses radiofrequency technology to produce heat, which stimulates the tissues to increase the production of collagen and natural moisture in the vagina, providing women welcome relief from dryness. It also increases sensation, and can even reduce urinary urgency and leakage. This non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatment can also tighten the labia both internally externally. It’s a popular treatment for women who have given birth and/or have gone through menopause. It is usually a quick 30-minute treatment and requires no downtime for recovery.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment

PRP (platelet-rich-plasma) treatment is a non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatment that injects the body’s own platelets and blood-derived growth factors into the vaginal area to revitalize the tissues of the vagina. During the procedure, PRP is injected into specific sites to stimulate stem cells to regenerate, multiply, and grow healthier vaginal tissue. The whole procedure for processing the blood and injecting the growth factors takes less than 30 minutes in the doctor’s office. And, again, requires no downtime for recovery. This procedure is popular for women who have difficulty being aroused, reaching orgasms, pain during intercourse, urinary leakage, and vaginal dryness.
